My First Visit
It is normal to feel overwhelmed or lost when visiting a place full of people that you may not know. That is why we have created this section. We want to give you a little preview of who we are and what we do so that your visit with us will be enjoyable. We want you to know what to expect so that you are not thrown for a loop when all the newness of your experience with us smacks you in the face. That is a little bit of an over statement, because once you visit JeffStreet you should find us to be friendly and helpful.
How to Get Here
Once you click on the map or the "Click to Interact" link, you can create custom directions from there. Otherwise, you can follow these easy directions.
From Woodlawn Road (Illinois Route 10), turn North onto Jefferson Street between Dairy Queen and Hundman Lumber. Follow Jefferson Street north for ¼ mile. After the first stop sign, you will see JeffStreet on your right. Follow the signs to the Worship Center Entrance.
When to Arrive
Services are held at 9:00am and 10:45am. Children’s Ministry programming and Adult Education opportunities also take place during both hours. We recommend arriving 15 minutes early so that you can find a parking space and get your bearings.
What to Wear
People at JeffStreet wear a variety of attire to our worship services. You will see anything from jeans and T-shirts to the occasional suit and tie. Please feel free to dress however you feel most comfortable. We just ask that you don’t wear anything offensive, immodest, or distracting, such as a shirt studded with battery operated Christmas lights in the middle of May.
Who You'll See When You Get Here
The first group of people that you will meet is the greeters. They will be standing at the doors to welcome you in. Don’t worry, they will just say, "Hello," and shake your hand. Once inside the foyer, you can stop by the information island with any questions. Outside the worship center doors, you will receive a program from one of our greeters. The program will have some announcements, a calendar of events for the upcoming week, as well as a sheet of paper for taking notes during the sermon. Don't sweat it, there won’t be a test on what you heard, but you may want to remember it later.
Opportunities for Your children
Here at Jeff Street we love your kids. We have caring, loving teachers with a heart for sharing Jesus with children. We offer classes for Birth – 6th grade on Sunday mornings during the 9:00 hour. During the 10:45 hour classes are available for Birth – 4th grades. 5th and 6th grades worship with their parents during the 10:45 hour.
We also value the importance of parents and their role in modeling a life of worship to their children. To assist in helping parents teach their children to worship, we offer a children’s sermon sheet called “The BackPack” which is available during each worship service to help your child draw key elements from the service.
As you enter the building, move through the wooden door opposite the Worship Center. Here you will find the Children’s Information Station/Check-in counter where a volunteer staff member will help you check your child in and assist in locating their classroom. All children Birth – Kindergarten are checked in using an adhesive name tag and also a pager for the parents. Please bring diapers and bottles or sippy cups for children birth to 2 years of age. Further information is available at the Information Station or by calling the church office (732-9294).
What Happens in the Worship Service
God has provided leaders at Jefferson Street with many gifts. Our services, therefore, are full of variety. Using the gifts given by God we offer times of praise and worship, communion, prayer, scripture reading, proclaiming God's Word, instruction, and times of response and commitment.
Offering time
You will see people passing around brass offering plates. If you are a first time visitor, DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO GIVE. As the plates go around, you may drop in the "Let's Get Acquainted" slip from the bulletin.
The bread and cup
Each week we remember Christ’s sacrifice: we eat the bread, representing his body that was broken; we drink the cup, representing his blood that was shed. This act of worship declares that Christ died, Christ is risen from the dead, and Christ will come again. All who follow him are welcome to share in communion with God’s people at JeffStreet.
Time of commitment
At some point in the service we provide the opportunity to respond to the message. If someone would like to know more about Jesus or the church, they can talk with a minister or the friendly folks in the Fireside Room after the service. Other people who have been investigating who Jesus is might want to commit to being one of his followers; those who are already followers of Christ may wish to commit themselves to worship and serve him with the folks at JeffStreet.
A word about musical style
While music is a key element in our response to God, we have elected to emphasize the unity of the Church and the diversity of backgrounds and experiences within it. Depending on the focus of each week’s biblical text, those who plan our worship services draw on a wide range of musical expression to help us worship God – from ancient hymns to modern worship songs. We emphasize compassion during our gatherings, because the Lord is merciful and Christ's Church is a living testimony to his great love.
Getting connected
We would love to help you get connected to our church family. The best way to get connected is to stop by the Fireside Room after the worship service. As you exit the worship center, the Fireside Room is located on your left hand side. Our hosts will greet you there with a gift.
Another way to get connected is to fill out the “Let’s Get Acquainted” card located in your program. You can simply drop it in the offering plate when it is passed, or bring it by the Fireside Room.
