What Happens in the Worship Service

God has provided leaders at Jefferson Street with many gifts. Our services, therefore, are full of variety. Using the gifts given by God we offer times of praise and worship, communion, prayer, scripture reading, proclaiming God's Word, instruction, and times of response and commitment.

Offering time

You will see people passing around brass offering plates. If you are a first time visitor, DO NOT FEEL OBLIGATED TO GIVE. As the plates go around, you may drop in the "Let's Get Acquainted" slip from the bulletin.

The bread and cup

Each week we remember Christ’s sacrifice: we eat the bread, representing his body that was broken; we drink the cup, representing his blood that was shed. This act of worship declares that Christ died, Christ is risen from the dead, and Christ will come again. All who follow him are welcome to share in communion with God’s people at JeffStreet.

Time of commitment

At some point in the service we provide the opportunity to respond to the message. If someone would like to know more about Jesus or the church, they can talk with a minister or the friendly folks in the Fireside Room after the service. Other people who have been investigating who Jesus is might want to commit to being one of his followers; those who are already followers of Christ may wish to commit themselves to worship and serve him with the folks at JeffStreet.

A word about musical style

While music is a key element in our response to God, we have elected to emphasize the unity of the Church and the diversity of backgrounds and experiences within it. Depending on the focus of each week’s biblical text, those who plan our worship services draw on a wide range of musical expression to help us worship God – from ancient hymns to modern worship songs. We emphasize compassion during our gatherings, because the Lord is merciful and Christ's Church is a living testimony to his great love.
